Electic Shock

I just got my electric bill and have come to the realization that my lifestyle must change. Some things have to go. The refrigerator I will keep, as for the rest:

No more lights. No more air conditioner. No more fans. I will sit in the dark and swelter.

No more CPAP. No more cd/radio/alarm clock (at least until August).

And from now on I shower only once per week — and only in cold water. The electric toothbrush must go.

No more laundry. I’ll just have to be much more careful about dirtying my clothes.

No more hair dryer. No more curling iron. (I am not sure where they are, but if I ever find them I will not use them.)

No more electric coffee pot. No more sandwich maker or microwave. No more toaster. All foods will be cooked on the gas range or eaten raw.

Both my telephone and my cell phone use power. They must be unplugged. The cell phone can recharge whenever I am driving the car.
Don’t panic. The computer will remain on,
my priorities are still in order.

    I fell of my chair laughing.

    One day you are giving money away, next minute you are unplugging everything because of the electric bill.

  3. I went through the same thing a month ago when I realized my electric bill was as much as our heating bill in the winter! We have tried to cut back and I turn my computer off at night but other than that….I will let you know if it worked next month when I get my next bill.

  4. I don’t even let my hubby see the electric bill- he blames the whole thing on my computer, so I just struggle and pay it all by myself. Sure beats listening to him complain, lol

  5. it helps to unplug things like the TV, VCR, DVD players, and stereos. They all have a feature called quick start where they are constantly using electricity so that when you turn them on, they come on quickly. Having them turned off doesn’t stop it, only unplugging them. My mom saved like 10 or 20 dollars off her electric bill doing that…

    Maybe they have a way to make computers energy efficient.

  7. I feel your pain. Those of us in colder climates were still recovering from our winter heating bills. Now we get the pleasure of being shocked by the electric company as well… lol

    Good luck saving a bit of money. I went out and bought energy efficient lightbulbs for every fixture in the house. I know it made a difference at the apartment that I used to live in.

  8. You and me both. We also have a pool. With an electric motor. And it’s using up and enormous amount of water. I am dreading the water bill. I have no clue how I will pay it when it comes around.

  10. Rob — enegry efficent lightbulbs are in every socket. And yes, my summer bill does kind of balance my winter bill since it doesn’t get too cold here. Only froze once last year.

    Goldennib — Las Vegas in the summertime is not a place to start taking fewer showers. Alas, more deodorant will NOT keep my friends by my side.

  12. If I could blog and have cold beverages….life is great! I think people before our time could have had all these luxuries, they were just smart. Can you imagine explaining to your great grandmother that a sandwich maker and electric toothbrush are necessities?

    No wonder they always had money to hand out to neighborhood children and grandchildren.
