Grading Math Tests

Academic Integrity is stressed in our school; as is honesty. In my mind Honesty and Integrity have always been married — locked in Holy Matrimony for all time. This morning as I graded the math tests I was once again reminded that not everybody shares my point of view:

Question 3a.) Is 24 a prime or composite number?

Student Answer: prime

Question 3b.) How can you tell?

Student Answer: I kopeed from my nabor.

Oooookay …..(btw, prime is the wrong answer).

  3. Hmm… honest without the integrity so much… that is interesting. I kinda agree with you I always thought they were married, as well. Apparently not everyone agrees. Oh, and does this child need a spelling tutor? lol

  4. That’s sooo funny. I love it.

    I have to share one of my funny cheating student stories from OSU. I had this Freshman Art 101 class there. 300 students. They had this assignment to go to an art show on campus and write a half page art review of a selected piece from the show. I got in all of the papers and started grading them, only I found it tiresome to grade the paper and then go through the pages of my roster and find their name alphabetically ito enter the grade. So, I decided to spread the papers out on my kitchen table and alphabetize them to match the roster. Somewhere in the middle of that stack, two people with the exact same paper ended up next to each other, alphabetically. I thought that was some pretty amazing justice. I had an interesting talk with those two…

  8. haha. well a little bit of both huh, not much integrity, but some honesty…….that is funny…….a good lesson, don’t copy, the answers might be wrong….

    For punishment, make him write ALL the mispelled words 10 times each…properly 😉

    By the way, the fact that one of your students is comfortable enough to be that honest with an authority figure is a good sign.

  14. When I taught math in a private academy the students cheated like crazy. Honesty and integrety were not part of their vocabulary. Once when my staright A student turned in her paper I asked, loudly enough for everyone to hear, how she made such a bad mistake on the third problem. Then I watched while students earsed their third answer. Of course her answer had been right.

  16. honesty is honesty. that needs to be acknolewdge.it’s a good first step..ahhh, poor kiddie..i hope he didn’t get in trouble with his parents…
