Is it any wonder I want out of here? Actually, my original plan was only to leave Las Vegas, but this whole state is crazy! Just read this:

Lawmaker Says Teachers Should Have Guns In Class

(Carson City, NV) — If state Senator Bob Beers has his way, every Nevada teacher will be able to keep a gun in the classroom. Beers says he’s working on a bill that would allow instructors and other school personnel to arm themselves during classes, once they complete a course on gun safety. The Las Vegas Republican believes students would think twice about bringing a gun to campus if they knew the teachers were armed as well. Not everyone is supporting Beers’ idea. Clark County School Superintendent Walt Rulffes tells the “Review-Journal” an armed staff would actually make schools less safe. He says more studies are needed before he would endorse the idea of teachers carrying guns to class.

  1. I see the Wild West is still wild …

    One heartening thought. Legislators have these sorts of dumb thoughts all the time. Rarely does anyone even know about them, much less do they make it into law.

    The odd [sic] one, though, does make it into the light – but only because some media mogul thinks it will get his company noticed (transl.: make them money).

  2. OC — This is still the wild west. Our public transportation security guards (bus bouncers) wear sidearms. Armed patrolmen stand permanent duty in many of our middle and high schools. The proposed solution to every local problem seems to begin and end in violence.

  5. Minka — excellent advice. We’ll be right there. There are 25 of us, counting me. You’re probably going to need to bring in a couple more beds and you might want to start cooking now.

  7. I remember this guy, he came out with this idea after that student shot and killed his principal a few months ago.

    I don’t know Quill, here in CA it is actually beginning to sound like a good idea! Trouble is, what about the teacher who is having a bad day? Hear about the teacher here in Bakersfield who duct taped her student’s mouth and hands? 35 year veteran. Guess she had just had enough huh? Hate to see what might have happened if she’d had a gun…..

    Kids are getting so way out of control, with no respect for their teachers, or anyone for that matter. As a parent, I point that out to my kids, and help them to understand that the world does not need more children like that.

  8. Wow, that is really messed up. And I agree that that’ll make schools even more dangerous than they already are. I think if anything, it would make guns easier for a student to get a hold of.

  9. Rachelle — exactly. I have nothing against guns and even have some marksmanship skills, but I don’t think guns belong in the hands of over-stressed, frustrated anybodies.

    Silver — indeed. I had a kid throw a desk at me once. Had a gun been nearby I believe I’d be dead.

  10. Here in FL, they passed a law last year, that if you feel threatened by someone, you can shoot them.

    In my job, in auto service, I see many customers who drive around with guns in their cars. Scary.

  11. I had a lot of great teachers, but there were a couple that you wouldn’t trust with a squirt gun.

    Not to mention legislators that have the insight of a paper clip.

    My question here would be what example are we setting for the students???
    sorry you have been having difficulty leaving me crumbs…have you thought of switching to beta. I was nervous when my daughter did it for me but now I think it is so wonderful. Organized and much easier to use. I have entered a short story contest, did you dive in? The deadline is now Dec. 30th if you have spare time (and who doesn’t in December)LOL you would win for sure….Let me know if you decide to move, just be sure to pack your gun!

    Pauline — Blogger kills without guns. I changed one of my blogs to the new version and suddenly most of the past comments appeared as “anonymous.” The comments on my blog are like gifts from my friends. I don’t want to lose them.

    Actually, I think I’d like to see that law of Beers’s get passed in Nevada. In fact, maybe I’d like to see it get passed nationwide. Perhaps that would wake up the National Education Association and get them to do the only thing that might get somebody’s attention.

  15. OC — I don’t think a strike is the answer. While it would definately get people’s attention, I don’t think it would raise the public’s opinion toward teachers. Aside from that, the disrespect teachers receive from both parents and students is just a symptom of much deeper social ill. The lack of respect for anyone or anything in general.

    Top that off with the fact that in many states — Nevada included — teachers are forbidden by law to strike.

  16. QD – you know my thoughts as a Brit. And having been out to the Deep South for an extended visit (my third to the USA) i gotta say, your country is scary and vaguely psychotic. Only those who have lived in a relatively gun free society could begin to understand how weird that kind of life must be. Get out of there. Individually, the Americans I have met are wonderful folk but as a society…?

  19. QD – no. You strike me as being as sane as sane could be. It’s the things that surround you that make the country appear vaguely pyschotic. I have met some wonderful people over there and I’m sure you are another. But all tell tales similar to this told by you and they shake their heads in disbelief and frustration. I don’t know how you stand it.

    Charlie — today I didn’t stand it well. This world is an ugly place and sometimes it is very hard to live in. Today three children arrived at my youth site and promptly asked for their lunch. We usually fed them after the program, just before sending them home. I asked why they couldn’t wait. The eldest responded, “Oh, there wasn’t enough food in the house for everybody to eat today, so only Mom and Dad got breakfast.”

  23. QD – go easy on yourself. You can’t own the problems of the world and your first duty is to you, so that you can help others second.

    Yes it is an ugly place but there are some nice people scattered about the world.

After writing my previous comment to you, I called someone I love, and he very patiently reminded me of all my sucesses, and pointed out that I am making a difference.
