Options
One of our vocabulary words this week is options. I asked the students if anyone knew what it meant. Ty raised his hand. “Choices,” he said. “Like on my video game button. I can choose what weapon I carry.”
“Right,” I said. “Or like a buffet — lot’s of options on what to eat.”
“Not in our cafeteria,” Ty answered.
“Uh-huh, they always give two choices,” Rick said.
Ty nodded his head. “Yeah,” he said. “Bad. And worse.”

Ha. Probably the same two casseroles I had to choose between in fifth grade. Or the leftovers of them.

Canned boiled spinach. That’s the grade-school cafeteria non-option that I remember. Still turns my stomach thinking about it.
So, school food hasn’t changed much.
I count us lucky here in the land of Oz. We have so many more options, and many of them are nice.
That sounds like every school cafeteria. So young and making jokes.
Why is it that everything in the school cafeteria is always the same color? Beets, lettuce, hambuger…everything always just looks yellow.

The cafeteria at your school sounds just like the cafeteria at my school I attended oh those so many years ago.
Bill — the sodium content of the meals in our cafeteria are what will kill you. There’s a week’s intake of sodium in the toasted cheese sandwiches.
Funny kid…..I thought it was interesting his first comment was weapons and yours was food. My first thought about opinions would involve which restaurant?????? (I always order the same thing so I never have to decide….)
Lori — food is one of those universal things. I often refer to it for examples in class because everybody has experience with it — and in Vegas everybody has experience with buffets.

My two kids were once reduced to tears because they were given goulash to eat and didn’t like the name. Bwahahahahahaha. I threaten them with it even now they are gone from the nest should they irritate me :o)

In Hull we have free school dinners which are specially created to be healthy as unfortunately for a lot of children this will be the only proper meal they get. Equally unfortunately the council has just changed and decided it costs too much, so no free dinners from next year, meaning malnourished kids who can’t concentrate, disrupting the rest of the class. There’s progress.

Bazza — we provide free breakfast AND free lunch — Monday through Friday. This is our first year of doing so and already we can see that it has improved behavior school-wide. Also, I used to send a kid to the school nurse on average three morning per week because of stomach aches. So far this year I have sent two. Personally, I think feeding the children is money well spent, even if it shouldn’t be the job of the school.
Well… good you’ve got your sense of humor! Because I have suffered such problems too — and without a sense of humor I can only imagine it would not be nearly as much fun! However… so much fun should only go on for a limited amount of time… and so I hope the doctor has SOME kinda trick up his sleeve to help you out!
Ty is SMART! He needs to move up! School cafeteria food is the pits! I don’t care WHAT school you go to! (oh wait — my daughter’s college has GOOD food… but that’s college!) And the stuff that they call HEALTHY! Oh my! If this is what our kids are being lead to believe is HEALTHY EATING we are in a world of trouble!
Melli — what do you expect from a program that is allowed to list ketchup as a vegetable? How can ketchup be a vegetable when a tomato is a fruit? And the government thinks teachers are screwing up education?
I’ll be honest, I haven’t read today’s post. I have been away for awhile. We lost power and water and phones twelve days ago in the first of the ice storms that moved threw here, and we finally got back home last night. I am slowly getting the story up at my blog and slowly, ever so slowly, getting back to reading friends’ blogs. Hope you’re doing well gf!
