Remedial Intervention Required

Marisol cannot correctly pronounce the name of one of her classmates. She calls her B’na Lee, so yesterday I said to her, “Repeat after me: Aaa. Na. Lee.

Marisol slowly repeats, “Aaa. Na. Lee.

“Good!” I say. “Aaa. Na. Lee.

Marisol repeats it slowly and perfectly again.

“That’s perfect!” I exclaim, then I say, “Ana Lee.”

And Marisol brightens. With a proud grin upon her face she turns to her friend and classmate, holds out her hand and says, “Come on, Banana Lee!” They clasp hands and run to the slide.

I remain kneeling on the sidewalk with my mouth open in astonishment. Ms. Angel chimes in brightly, “That was really good, Ms. Charlene. What are you going to teach her next?”

Quilly is the pseudonym of Charlene L. Amsden, who lives on The Big Island in Hawaii. When she is not hanging out with Amoeba, she is likely teaching or sewing. Or she could be cooking, taking photographs, or even writing. But if she's not doing any of that, she's probably on Facebook or tinkering with her blog.

  1. Polona — that seems to be Marisol’s motto in life.

Doug — I’ll hide in the corner (behind the big steel filing cabinet) while you run that idea by Ana Lee’s mommy.

  2. Wishing you both a very Merry Christmas!!!
    May you be blessed
    with sunshine
    that sparkles in
    your hair like
    stars that fell
    from heaven
    that you may
    both share
    the glow
    and joy
    of Christmas
    in Hawaii
    oh so fare 🙂
