Tide’s Out

The tide is out, exposing the inner reef.

We live on the side of that mountain you see in the back round, on a lower slope just below the hanging valleys.

From the sea to the shore. The tide is on it’s way back in.

And so are the surfers.

Surfers paddling out.

Surfing!

They made it look easy, but trust me, I was content to take my pretty pictures and scuffle along the shore.

Quilly is the pseudonym of Charlene L. Amsden, who lives on The Big Island in Hawaii. When she is not hanging out with Amoeba, she is likely teaching or sewing. Or she could be cooking, taking photographs, or even writing. But if she's not doing any of that, she's probably on Facebook or tinkering with her blog.

  1. Great pictures. I envy you. When I look out all I see is snow. My deck is covered with it and we can’t open that door. You get to watch surfers and the tide. Wow!

  2. My husband was sitting beside me when I came here. He saw the first photo and said, “Wow. How beautiful.” We scrolled down a little, and he said, “Is that her?” We happened to be at the surfers photo, and I said, “What?! Surfing??” He pointed at the sidebar and said, “Yeah. Surfing. No, on the side!” I couldn’t figure out why he thought you would be surfing.

  3. Dr. John — it was a good day — and now I have the flu. Again. I have been sick since we landed on this rock!

Brig — when it comes to surfing I am definitely on the side — beach side!

  4. The area where you were taking pictures looks like lava rock, very little vegetation it looks like. But I am sure the surfers couldn’t care less as long as they have great waves. haha

Quilly surfing!!! Sounds much like the dream of Nea surfing, haha……isn’t going to happen.

  5. Nea — this island is one big lava rock surrounded by coral. Most of the shoreline is a mixture of the two. The surfers actually do care about those rocks. They break bones and take lives every year. Oahu’s best surfing beaches aren’t for the faint of heart.

That means I won’t be surfing. I dashed (bashed and smashed) all the recklessness out of me years ago. These days I prefer to opt for adventures that cause none or only minimal pain.

  6. i want to walk along that shore and watch those surfers out there…
perhaps i should buy a lottery ticket? 😉

  7. How beautiful…just takes my breath away. Surfing is hard, tried it when I was kid in California. Several lungs full of water later, I decided I was definitely happier on skis behind a boat!

  8. Brian — if I tried surfing, my ten would be hanging from a traction rod in some hospital.

Jill — I don’t think I could manage the detail with fingerpaints ….

Polona — yep. Need a dollar?

Kat — I haven’t tried it. Luckily during my reckless years I lived far, far away from the sea.

Mumma — a photo can do that — or a song, or a smell.

  9. These are soooooo pretty! Hey! I thought the sand in Hawaii was WHITE… except when it’s black… but that sand is tan…. there I go gettin’ edumacated at your blog again!!!
