Jientje’s 1000 Words Photo Challenge

Jientje, our mistress of fun, has cooked up a wonderful photo challenge, and this is what she has to say about it:

When I was a kid, I was always fascinated by the colourful language my grandmother used.  She had such a way with words, she had her own funny ways to describe things and that memory still makes me smile. As long as people have been around, they have tried to communicate with each other. As a means of getting the message across as clearly as possible, idioms and sayings have found their way into our language.

Now, because a picture paints a thousand words, I thought it would be nice to make this a new photo challenge. The idea is to pick an idiom, or a saying, ( even slang is allowed) and illustrate it with a picture. Each week we’ll cover two letters of the alphabet, okay?

If  “language is the dress of thoughts” ( Johnson), then idioms must the wardrobe …

And so we continue …. (And I am behind, so you get two weeks worth from me!)

Week Three: E & F

Every Time  a Bell Rings, An Angel Gets His Wings

This is not really an idiom, but it is a colorful part of American speech. It came to us from the Christmas movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life,”when Clarence, the angel explains the significance of bell ringing to George Bailey.  At the end of the movie, when Clarence has successfully kept George from committing suicide, George hears a bell ring, and knows that in heaven, Clarence has finally earned his angel wings.

Finger in Every Pie

If you have a finger in every pie, then you have diversified your investments and have many different sources of real and/or potential revenue.

Week Four: G & H

Good As Gold

If something is as good as gold, then it is a solid and dependable investment.  If a person is considered as good as gold, it means they are very trustworthy and stable.

Hidden in Plain Sight

If something is hidden in plain sight, it is generally right where it should be, and is just being overlooked. For Amoeba and I — especially I — that is usually our glasses right on the top of our heads!

  1. I am impressed with the all of it all !!! How your minds work 24-7 is beyond me. I can’t even keep up witht he reading let alone composing!!! You are just plain gifted and talented ! Can never seem to praise you enough, you just continue to astound ! XOXO C

    1. Tony — if you look at the photo of Amoeba then you’ll see that “point and click” needs to have “aim and hold-steady” added.

    1. Thom — of course they’re awesome, I had an extra week to think on them! Ha! There is method to my forgetfulness! (Truth, Amoeba will tell you I did them at 10 p.m. tonight and took the pictures when he walked in the door from band practice — hence my hastiness and him appearing slightly out of focus.)

        1. Thom — I took one quick snap when Amoeba got home from band practice. The poor man hadn’t made it any further into the house than the kitchen/dining room door. I met him with my camera in hand and blabbering about putting his glasses atop his head and sticking his finger in the still hot pie and the poor man just complied — because that’s safest when living with a crazy person!

  2. Giggles!! I love them!!! Especially that last one, whit that ” a-little-bit-surprised-but- then-again-not-but-certainly-very-happy-to-see-you” amused kind of look in his eyes! ROFL!!
That pie makes me hungry Quilly, I haven’t eaten yet! * whizzes off to the kitchen pantry*

This is fun, and yours were double fun!!

Jientje’s last blog post..A Thousand words in Idioms, G and H

    1. Jientje — he always looks at me like that, and I love it (even if, as in this pic, it is slightly out of focus)!

      1. Hey, it’s better than a bearded dragon. I keep hearing about them at the pet store, but I’m sure they’re having a laugh. Everyone knows dragons aren’t real, and a bearded one??? Don’t be absurd.

  3. ROFLMBO! I am forever misplacing my glasses … and nearly always they ARE on top of my head! I don’t get HAT HAIR nearly as often as I get Glasses Hair!

    Those bells are sO pretty!

These were all great Quilly! I promise I will be as boring as I can when Jientje is here … I don’t want to ruin it for you! But I don’t know yet if she is coming to me first, or last? She is working all that out!

    Melli’s last blog post..Idiom Wednesday – G & H … and things.

    1. Melli — sometimes I misplace my glasses when they are on my nose — especially now that my allergies mess with my vision (gunk in my eyes). Things look blurry so take a tissue to wipe my eyes and encounter not eye, but glasses!

And Jientje asked me about places to visit on her way to Hawaii, since you are East and I am West, I just sort of thought she’d stop there first!

      1. I would think she would go East…what you think she’s going to fly over russia, china and the pacific to get here when she could do the atlantic first and then over? pffft

Thom’s last blog post..How Spiritual Are You?

        1. Thom – -I said she should stop East first. What is your problem? But you know, what makes sense to us, may not be what’s cheapest flight wise. She’s still waiting to see what the travel agency has to say.

  4. I’m just sitting here w/o a thought in my head for any idoms or pictures to go with them. Busy day today and I can’t even think of a post at all….oh well…maybe something will come to me after this morning’s meeting and the meeting tonight.

Your pics and idioms are very good. 🙂

  5. What a lovely way to catch up! I get to have a closer look to those bells for the first time, they are wonderful!
I had that “finger in a pie” idea but no finger available, lol. Great job, quilly,

Mar’s last blog post..It’s meme time!

  6. Mar — the pie had only been out of the oven for about 40 minutes and Amoeba said it was hot so I am very lucky I had a finger available — and Amoeba says he’s very lucky he had a finger left afterward! I soothed him with nice warm pie and nice cool ice cream.

      1. So I asked, “Then why did you leave your finger in the pie!?” And of course, he did it because he loves me (or because it’s scary when I get all hyper like I was).

  7. Very creative illustrations. I often go to put on my glasses when I’m wearing them. That probably means I need new glasses.
I am almost sorry I didn’t get in on this one but only almost.

Dr. John’s last blog post..Liberals Lie?

    1. Dr. john — I am sure you would have brought your wonderful style and humor to the project and we are the poorer without you.

    1. I don’t way him anything, but he will tell you that he weighs more now under my loving care than he did before he met my cooking at the table everyday.

  8. Rosidah — I picked the illustrations I thought would get the most laugh. I’m glad you enjoyed them. Oh — and the pie was delicious. We each had a piece right after the photo was snapped.

  9. Oh my-he has facial hair. When did that happen? Has it really been that long. I demand a meeting of everyone soon so we can all catch up. Like the beard. Do you play with it a lot Quilly?

    1. OJM — what questions you ask in public! AND — Monday, BBQ, our place. Lunch since Paul has to be to work at 4:00 p.m.

  10. Barbara — well, you don’t necessarily have to make up what you missed. Just jump in mid-stream and swim along!

  11. It’s a Wonderful Life has to be one of the best movies ever made. I even wrote an essay assignment for my students based on the movie. They were to interview two people to see how they had touched their lives in ways the student wouldn’t have known. It turned out to be a popular assignment.
