Protect Your Cat

Several years ago I had a friend with a simple swinging flap cat door.  She came home from work one day to find her home had been invaded by a strange cat.  Perhaps he followed (or chased) her cat home,  but however he got there, once inside he  sprayed her couch, the carpet, her laundry hamper, and her bedding!  Her house reeked of cat urine, and her cat was terrified and trembling in its own home.  She boarded up her cat door never to use it again.  The cat had to stay inside all day while my friend was at work, and they both had to contend with a litter box, which neither of them liked.  Happily, the Pet Porte microchip cat flap has put an end to such worries.

The Pet Porte microchip cat flap is a securely locking door that you program so only your cat, or cats, can open it! When your cat reaches the door, the Pet Porte reads its vet installed microchip (no ugly, heavy, expensive collars!) and unlocks instantly — even if your cat is heading for the house on the run.  The flap will open in as little as 1/29th of a second, but only for your cat.   The Pet Porte will unlock only for microchips it has been programmed to read*.  And the flap, made of study high impact plastic, cannot be forced or broken.

I spent quite a bit of time perusing the Pet Porte website. It has an interesting and informative FAQ page, a Forums page (talk to other Pet Porte owners), videos of the Pet Porte in action, and a chip checker so you can make certain your cat’s microchip is compatible with the door before you order!  The Pet Porte is manufactured in the UK, but according to their site they gladly ship to the USA and the rest of the world.  (USA residents will have to buy a power adapter for the 12v power source.)  The Pet Porte will also work for smaller breed dogs.  A Pet Porte for larger dogs is in development.

*Uses european-style 15 digit microchips available from Bayer Thayer ir Identichip.  Will not read American 10 digit microchips.

  1. THAT is a very interesting concept! WE have friends who had a pet door and ended up with racoons in the house! Thus we have sworn off pet doors! I personally would LOVE one although, I’m betting my Jewl wouldn’t USE it — she would continue to scratch at the door. She’s one of those “chicken” dogs that won’t go through a “tunnel” or any tight space. Dennis built her a dog house — a HUGE dog house – she’s a black lab after all — That dog house SAT in our yard for about 5 years before we gave it some friends for their dog! We couldn’t get Jewl to go inside it no matter WHAT we threw in there to entice her! LOL! But I’ll tell you what — if I thought for a MINUTE she WOULD use it, I’d be callin’ those people! I bet they do good business!

    1. Yeah — I have heard of wild creatures entering homes through unsecured animals doors! Scary thought what one could come home to! Jewl sounds like a dog I had as a kid. Our was a timid boxer and when she got scared she’d crawl into bed with me!

  2. That is really cool! And the actual website is fun with the video of the guy with his cat. No critters at the moment. (I wonder why. lol) But the next time I’m in the market, I would want something like that. 🙂

  3. That’s a very clever solution. Even though I don’t let my cat outside most of the time when I’m not at home, and the patio is mostly cat proof, it HAS happened to us too. One of the neighbour’s cat managed to get in, there was a bit of a fight, and my doll was on the floor with broken arms and toes. A doll once made by me, such a crying shame!

    1. Well, I’m glad it wasn’t your cat that was broken! The pet door can be locked, so you could leave the cat free to come and go while you are home, but locked securely inside when you are not.

  4. Hi, I’m James the guy on the website. Thanks for writing this review. I also appreciate all the comments. I wonder if many of you are from the USA? We now ship this product to the USA. Because it works with a 9 volt battery the power supply issue is no longer a problem but you would require your cat to have a 15 digit European type microchip such as Bayer Tracer or Identichip and not the 10 digit American type of microchip.

    1. Thank you, James. I read on the site that it required certain brands of chips, but didn’t grasp that those brands were continent specific.
