Yet Another Job Interview

So I went on another job interview today.  The job is mine if I want it.  It starts in January.  You know, January — the month we’re packing up and moving away?  Yep.  Pft.

—–

And this from the private school:  We regret to inform you that another applicant has been chosen for the position.

Listen, if they really regret it, they’d have hired me, right?  Another pft!

Amoeba sent me this email he received from a colleague.  Maybe I should try this:

Since this promises to be an unusually annoying week, I thought I would attach a form letter from the Harvard Law Review  for those applying for jobs and being rejected:

“I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me a position. This year I have received an unusually large number of rejection letters, making it impossible for me to accept them all. Despite your outstanding experience in rejecting applicants, your refusal does not meet my needs at this time. Therefore I shall initiate employment with your department on September . . .”

  1. Sorry you didn’t get the job, Quilly. With just 3 months to go before you depart for the mainland, maybe you should just relax and enjoy yourself. More than likely, it will be a long time before you return to Hawaii, right? So soak up the culture and do fun things while you’re still here. Just a suggestion.

    1. Gigi — it is a great suggestion. It would be even better if the culture were free ….
And we’ll probably visit Kona from time-to-time because Amoeba still has business ties there.

  2. I know a guy who got a job by sending a shoe to a company (to get his foot in the door). I wouldn’t necessarily recommend sending this letter to a school, but if there’s a job you apply for at a place where they seem like they have at least a basic sense of humor, I’d go ahead and send it. I mean, what’s the worst that can happen? They still don’t offer you the job?? And the best thing that could happen is they keep you in mind as someone with a great sense of humor, in addition to all your other great skills. When another job comes up, they are really likely to remember you, and might just call and ask you to come in and interview.

    1. Lisa — I have heard of all kinds of gimmicks that worked — and all kinds that failed. I fear I would be one of the big time failures.

  3. Hahaha ! that makes me wordless (for once) absolutely great. I am a little late, spend the day at the beach yesterday and not at the computer. You are moving ? where ?

    1. Gattina — once again, if everybody would just read my posts! You all are so bad for my ego! I made the announcement on August 25th and have been talking about it ever since. [shakes head] We are moving to Friday Harbor, WA. Amoeba will be working at Friday Harbor Labs.

  4. Love the e-mail rejection letter — if only it would work.

I can see why a place wouldn’t hire someone who is only going to be in town for a few months. Are there any temp agencies from which you could fill in for the time being? It seems like you said you checked out substitute teaching — which is a job that had never appealed to me though I know some who enjoy it.

  5. Susan — I am not in eminent peril of going hungry or being homeless. Amoeba takes good care of me. I just appreciate having my own money, a bit of independence and something to do. Gigi suggested I run around the island and enjoy my vacation soaking up Hawaii. That would be grand but it costs money! Since I am not making any money, even if we can afford it, I am reluctant to just pass it out too generously. There were too many years in my life when saving every penny was crucial to eating from payday to payday!

  6. Wasn’t it wonderful they offered the job to you, too bad it came a bit too late. I am sure you will get something on the Mainland once you are settled.

Loved the letter rejecting the rejection letter.

    1. Bill — I am moving to yet another island. If I get a job on the mainland you are condemning me to two long, expensive commutes everyday. Thank you.
