Silly Haiku Meets Random Dozen

Join the fun!

A proper Haiku is so much more than a 5-7-5 syllable pattern, but I wasn’t invited to do a proper Haiku. I was asked for a silly one, so here it is — the theme for this week is chaos:

Papers and books stacked?
Dirty clothes in heaps and piles?
Who cares? I’m writing.

1. Which is worse: a long, boring meeting or standing in a return/exchange line after Christmas?

Well, I attend the meetings, but I refuse to stand in exchange lines, so I guess the lines are worse.

2. Except for maybe Rosie O’Donnell or Ann Coulter, nobody likes confrontation, yet we all have to deal with it. When you feel cornered and defensive, do you “bite back” or become passive aggressive?

I am apt to do either.  It really depends on who is doing the pushing and why, as well as how competent I am in that context.

3. Do you know anything about your genealogical background? (What country, culture, ties to prominent historical figures, or other stuff.)

I have a book compiled on the history of my paternal family from the early 1400s.

4. What is the quickest way a person can endear him/herself to you?

Be authentic.  If you want to be my friend, say what you mean; mean what you say, and share your chocolates.

5. Cake, pie, cookies, or ice cream? (Note there is no “all of the above” option. You must choose one. Feel free to elaborate on flavor or memories tied to this dessert.) If you’d like, you can share a recipe, but you certainly don’t have to.

Well, if I have to choose, ice cream.  Moose Tracks.  Yum.  If I don’t have to choose, French Vanilla ice cream and Nestle’s Toll House Cookies!

6. Females: Do you regularly change your handbag to coordinate with your outfit?

I used to.  Now I carry a denim bag and live in denim clothes.  Of course, when I leave this land of perpetual summer, that may change.

7. Are you task-oriented or relationship-oriented?

Yes.

8. IHOP, Bob Evans or Cracker Barrel?

Don’t know Bob Evans.  Of the two remaining, IHOP for breakfast then Cracker Barrel for dinner.  😉

9. Have you ever left a movie in progress in a theater? Why?

Yes.  Too much smex on the screen and in the seat to my immediate left with was occupied by a total stranger who had a, uhm, really good grip on himself.  At first I just closed my eyes.  I was afraid to stand up and leave in case somebody recognized me.  Then it dawned on me that if someobody recognized me, I wanted them to see me leaving!  I went over the seat and into the empty row behind me rather than risk touching (or being touched by) the guy beside me.  [shudder]

10. What is one area of life in which you would like to develop more discipline or organization?

Writing!

11. Was middle school fun or painful?

Fun!  And if it wasn’t fun, my friends and I did something to liven things up.  (Yep, we were that bunch.)  Study hall had 100 desks and was built auditorium style with a slanting floor.  Once about a dozen of us all took a handful of marbles in, sat in the very back row, and put them down on the floor ….

12. What is your favorite Fall beverage?

Here in Hawaii, I drink mint iced tea, or Diet Dr. Pepper, or water, year round.  Once upon a time, when I knew what Fall was, I liked hot Manzanita tea.

    1. Nicole — #2 also greatly depends on my mood. Sometimes I use humor to diffuse the situation. Sometimes I just start asking questions until my attacker is on defense. It all depends on the situation.

  1. Gosh, I wish I understood why Haiku is more than a prescribed number of syllables.

As for Nr. 2, I can’t answer for me. I’m usually the gorilla.

  2. #11 — I wonder whose idea that was? Quilly? Quilly? Anyone? What a great story.

We went on strike for a more challenging writing curriculum in 7th grade. Yeah, we thought striking was the thing to do because we’d seen it work on TV. ha ha ha ha But we did get a better curriculum…after we had to write essays about disrespectful behavior.

    sigh.

  3. I so enjoyed your answers to this one, and the haiku was great! Thank you for the commentary related to that (I couldn’t help doing the same on mine LOL)

Amen to no. 10, and the mint iced tea. The handbag question interested me; the only time I ever change handbags is for a funeral; I have a ‘funeral handbag’ which is always my only extra. Whenever the ‘regular’ one finally dies, I go back to Goodwill and get another one LOL.

    1. I don’t even have a funeral handbag! Of course, I try to have really good excuses for not attending funerals. In fact, I rather hope I don’t have to show up for my own!

    1. Linda — blame Amoeba. HE came along and distracted me and I guess a Linda is a Linda and I snatched the wrong name & link from my blogroll while trying to write one thing and carry on a conversation about another.

    1. TMC — meals and dishes come first. Meals because I like to eat, too. Dishes because in this tropical climate the kitchen stays clean or the bugs take over.

    1. Annie — once upon a time I could tell people I was published, but that time was 12 years ago, so now I am a has been trying to make a come back. 😉

  4. Ohhhhhh criminy! I forgot the Haiku thing today! *sigh* Yours is great! (most poems called Haiku are NOT true Haiku Quilly… it’s okay…)

You had STUDY HALL in middle? We didn’t have it until high school. I bet my middle school experience would have been AWESOME with YOU around! LOL!
    .-= Melli´s last blog ..Random Dozen #3 =-.

    1. Melli — when I was in middle school, we were in what had been the Junior College when my Mom was a girl — and the building was old then. The buildings had steam radiators and the window glass was made before clarity was perfected. The glass was bluish-gray, had the occasional air bubble in it and distorted the view so the outside world looked wavy and a bit like an impressionist painting. My class retired that school. After we left, they condemned it.

    1. Dr. John — three years you’ve been reading my blog and only now you decide you like me? And what finally did it, my messy house or my answer to #11?

  5. I was looking forward to your answers, and you did not disappoint!

#2: very smart answer regarding knowing your own strengths/weaknesses before biting back

    #4: Clever

I found out that Bob Evans is regional.

#9: You win the “best in show” for this question. Unbelievable.

Glad you joined in this week.

  6. Hi Quilly,
I’t’s so very nice to meet you. This was a fun way for me to get a quick handle on who you are. Your blog is truly awesome! I’m a retired teacher also. Once a teacher, always a teacher. I have a lot of teachers in my blog family. I guess that’s why it feels so much like a family.

  7. thanks for stopping by my blog and thanks for the tips in regards to prayer. God has been working on me all summer in the area of prayer, one of the reasons I added the praying for you tab on my blog. I will put these tips to good use!!

I loved your #4……..I’d share my chocolates!!!

    1. Barbara — maybe I’ll do a family history post some day. I feel like such a fraud bragging on it because I did not of the research AND because I was raised by my mother’s family so despite the history being attached to my last name, I feel like an imposter!

  8. Great answers, Quilly! #9 is so annoying. I can’t understand why these people don’t stay at home for their “business”. Just recently we went to the cinema to watch “Bolt” and I couldn’t believe my eyes. It’s a children movie and there was this inappropriate couple at the back row! They could at least choose another movie.
.-= Rosidah Abidin´s last blog ..Playful Spirits =-.

    1. Rosidah — I think that for perverts half the excitement of their perversion is being watched and/or the possibility of getting caught. You should have reported the couple — but I know, so hard to do during the movie you paid for & want to watch, and when it involves dragging a passel of children with you.

    1. Audrey — somehow I had slipped out of the habit of reading until just recently. Suddenly I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book!

  9. Terrific senryu, Ms. Quilly 😉

Sorry I’m late making my rounds this week, it’s been completely nuts… as you can no doubt tell.

Hope to see you again next week. Think I’ll do it now and schedule it to publish, so I’m not caught short again!

    1. Jenn — then it seems you picked the right theme for this week! AND I know just how you feel. I run my own Thursday theme and have been caught unprepared more than once!
