Here are the answers to: One is Not Like the Others.  Yesterday I asked you to guess which one of the following 10 things isn’t true. I had a lot of fun with your guesses. We could leave it like that, but I figured you’d want the truth.

1.) My first car was a motorcycle.
True. Read the whole story here: My 1st Car ….

2.) A ten year-old child once saved my life.
This one is true, too.  I thought I blogged about it, but I can’t find the post.  I was choking to death –literally — and Danny ran out into the hall and let out a blood curdling scream. Dozens of grown ups showed up and the P.E. teacher did the Heimlich Maneuver. Later when I asked Danny why he screamed instead of yelling for help, he said it’s because grownups don’t listen when kids yell for help, but they always come if they think a kid is hurt.

3.) I’ve driven an 18 wheeler.
True. My ex- was a long haul truck driver.

4.) December 1980 I lived in a tent in western Montana.
True. I was homeless from the 1st week of October until Christmas Eve.

5.) I had a pet rooster.
True. I named him Piccolo Pete. He answered to his name, liked to be petted, and ate apples and crackers from my fingers.

6.) When I was six I ran away from home & went to the library.
True.  Read about my adventure here:  The Library.

7.) In 7th grade, the principal’s son wore a dress to school because of me.
True. Read about my adventure here: The Resistance Leader

8.) I saw Star Wars, “A New Hope,” in the movie theater every single day for 3 weeks in a row.
False. Gram wouldn’t let me go on Sundays.  I loved that movie!

9.) I knocked the vice-principal flat on his back in high school.
I could have sworn I blogged about this, too, but I can’t find it.  This is true.  I was running through the halls, cut the corner into the library and … you’d think by the time a guy made it to vice-principal he’d have learned to get out of the way!

10.) I never missed a single day of school in 2nd, 3rd, & 4th grade.
True. Now, as a teacher, I know such children are usually the most challenging students …

  1. A-ha! I thought I remembered the story of the little boy screaming and the PE teacher doing the Heimlich as well. Maybe you wrote that on another blog?

    1. SN — Star Wars stayed in the movie theater all summer and I saw it at least 3-5 times per week, and then it went to the drive-in theater and stayed there forever. One of my friends and I — him a math whiz — sat down to figure out how many times we’d seen the show and came up with, at the very least, 100. Out of all of that I bet I paid my own way in maybe 6 times.

  2. And my name isn’t flashing in big bright lights on this blog for being the first one to correctly guess the answer because???????

  3. you know, all these things are quite fascinating… i’m not even sure i’d be able to come up with 10 remotely interesting things about me

  4. Ah, this is a testament of I should have listened to my first inclination! Fun to do and to read. You’ve led an interesting life!
