A 13th Random Dozen

random dozen

It’s that time again! Lidna over at 2nd Cup of Coffee has come up with 12 more questions.  This is her 13th Dozen.  I just love her memes. They make me think!

1. Are you sticking to traditional Thanksgiving foods this year, or are you being culinarily adventurous?
Yes to both. We are having the traditional turkey, gravy, stuffing, potatoes mashed, etc. PLUS I am treating my friends to some Tofurkey Jones Soda (in fact I have put this out as a meme challenge to others) AND I am trying a couple of new recipes for old favorites (Pecan & Pumpkin pies).

2. Tell me something concrete that you’re thankful for. (Something you can literally touch, see, etc., not a concept like “hope.”)
I am thankful for my Amoeba.

3. You knew the flip side was coming: Share about something intangible that you’re thankful for.
God’s love and grace.

4. Share one vivid Thanksgiving memory. It doesn’t have to be deep or meaningful, just something that remains etched in your memory.
When my cousin Patty and I were little we would steal black olives from the relish dish — one for each finger. Then we’d run and hide and eat them one-by-one!

5. What is one thing that you know beyond a shadow of a doubt is going to happen this Thanksgiving because it always does, year after year?
I eat too much. Duh.

6. Do your pets get any left-overs?
No pets.

7. Does your family pray before the big meal? If so, do you join hands while seated, stand, repeat a formal prayer or offer a spontaneous prayer? Who does the praying?
Does my family pray? Yes. Do the people we are inviting to our home? I know for a fact one does not. I’ve not yet decided how we’re handling this. Probably with a moment for silent thanks.

8. Will you be watching football in the afternoon? If not, what will you be doing?
No football. Laughing with friends.

9. There are two distinct camps of people on this issue: How do you feel about oysters in the dressing/stuffing?
It depends on who makes the dressing. The only oyster dressing i have ever liked was my Aunt Aldy’s, and she is no longer with us.

10. Do you consider yourself informed about the first Thanksgiving?
Yes. I know what foods we eat they probably didn’t, and the true story of the pilgrim’s suffering and the native’s very slow, skeptical & cautious decision to help.

11. Which variety of pie will you be enjoying?
Pecan and Pumpkin, at the very least.

12. Do you feel for the turkey?? (This is a humorous throw back question related to the 12th question in another Random Dozen!)
Nope. I didn’t have to kill it. (That’s probably a bad thing.)

  1. Quilly, your link from Lidna isn’t working, so I came directly.

I’ll be praying for God to give you wisdom on how to handle the prayer on Thursday. I’m sure He will!

Have a WONDERFUL holiday! I wish we could have an open house celebration like that but we have difficult extended family members who do not usually make “outsiders” feel welcome. Rather than subject our friends and neighbors to that, we just stick to the extended family and grind our teeth politely.

    1. Thanks for both the prayer & the link info. My webhost was down last night and didn’t do my autopost until today – -which changed the date, which changed the link. Argh.

I have done the “difficult family members thing”. I will lift up prayers for your celebration as well!

    1. Doug — Lidna isn’t a typo. Of course you’d know that if you checked out the link. (Or were here a couple weeks ago when Bill attempted to tell me I didn’t know how to spell. (I don’t, but in this case I’m correct.)

  2. I have lived here for seven years and there has never been an issue over the fact that Archie and his parent’s say grace and I don’t. I simply sit quietly while they do it then continue eating when they are done. Actually, I did that before I moved here, when Archie was staying with me instead. He said grace for himself and I kept my mouth shut while he did his thing. When he’s at someone else’s house or a restaurant he just bows his head quietly then goes back to talking and eating like he never stopped. In my opinion, if your friend is a mature person, they won’t mind waiting while you say grace. It’s your house and it’s just how you do things.

    1. Tina — I am certain my guests will not complain, disrupt or act badly. What I don’t wish to do is make them uncomfortable of resentful toward God. That can happen.

  3. I think us outside the US should have a virtual Thanksgiving dinner, there will be only a few of us blogging next Th!!

  4. LOL Doug’s comment! And I don’t know what happened about the link, but yeah it says this page doesn’t exist, but I knew it did and I found you!

    Your #2 made me smile.

And #5 made me laugh. As if there were any other answer! Although someone said “snow”, which is totally beyond my comprehension!!

    1. Linda —

Doug is incorrigible — well, actually, he is a saved believer, so he really only pretends to be incorrigible — but don’t tell him I said so! You know, as much as you like words, you might like Doug’s site.

I thank God for Amoeba everyday.

As to snow, it hasn’t been part of my Thanksgiving concerns in over 20 years. Maybe next year ….

  5. I was not able to get the Tofurkey pop… OR a hat! I’m so sad… I have actually found a hat online – but it wouldn’t be here in time…

I just MIGHT try that pumpkin thing you posted awhile back! I forgot all about that! And thank you MUCH for the prayers!

I hope you guys have a fabulous Thanksgiving! I really can’t WAIT to hear about the Tofurkey tasting!

      1. I did! And the other night I ran around to ALL of them in our area. But I knew NONE of them would have that flavor! I did find the green apple and *gag me* the bubble gum! *shudder* …. but no Tofurkey…. I MIGHT could have ordered it from the company — but $20 for a six pack of what I’m sure will be rather gross soda just seemed a bit much to me… I’m sO sorry! I really REALLY did want to do it!

        1. I just went to my store and they have NO JONES SODA at all! But they usually do. That shelving is just bare. I wonder who is having the big Jones Soda party?

Oh well, maybe we can do it together next year – -that gives us more time to plan!

  6. My middle son, the culinary adventurer, got a sixpack of different Jones’ sodas a couple of years ago: one was turkey, I don’t remember what the other ones were, but they were all related to Thanksgiving. They were pretty awful. He took the ones he didn’t drink to his class’s Christmas party as a “white elephant” gift.

With my non-Christian family members, when we’re out our house, we pray: when we’re with them, we used to each quietly pray on our own, but after a while they began asking Jim to pray for the meal.

We don’t have olives, but I can just picture #4.

    #5 — me, too.

    1. Barbara — #5 — all but a very weird few! And your son & I probably got the same soda pack. I took mine to school and gave my students tastes (tiny paper cups) and had them write “advertisements” for it. I didn’t tell them what it was. They had to name their product and write an ad. The whole experience was a riot!

      1. Quilly, my mom quit putting the black olives out on the table because I would finish them off before the meal even began! And the same with the green olives for my sister! I’m not crazy about the green olives… I do remember sucking the pimento out and then putting the olives back — but I don’t remember how long I got away with that!

        1. LOL! Melli — I used to take a toothpick and pull the pimentoes out of the olives — never even thought of picking them up and sucking them out. Too funny. I am so NOT eating at your house!

  7. Just dropping by. I’ll have to think about those questions…Yes I did get the “pony” thanks! Thanksgiving is looking nice this year. 5 grandkids and all but one of my kids will be here. Even my husband who I haven’t spoken to in 8 months. Things are looking up.

  8. Ha! I laughed at your olive story. That is exactly what my kids always did. Except they never tried to sneak it, they just blatantly did it in front of everyone. LOL. As a result I usually bring an extra can of olives wherever we go.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

    1. Susanne — I didn’t learn until I was much older that we never fooled anybody and extra olives were at hand for when we emptied the dish!

  9. Quilly, you have good answers for me. The best is a reminder of why I don’t do many memes. They are a lot of work.
No football Thursday, a lot Friday and Saturday with the colleges.
I’ll have my oysters scalloped, fried, or raw. My dressing choice is Southern turkey dressing made with corn bread and giblets. Some put hard boiled egg bits in, Mrs. Jim says hers are in her corn bread.

    Happy Thanksgiving!
    ..

    1. Gigi — my friend is bringing the turkey and stuffing, & making the gravy. Another friend is bringing the finger food. I am not doing all the work. In fact, with Lavon around, I usually end up doing very little of the work because she is much faster and more efficient. She is really hosting this party — just in my house because it’s bigger.

    1. Thom — thanks & Happy Turkey Day to you. Remember, keep your head down. I’d hate to see you stuffed and on somebody’s table!

    1. Jientje — I will miss my friends here, but I am looking forward to the move to the mainland because of the friends and family I already have there.

  10. Oh, you make me wish we were celebrating it too! I have a turkey for Thursday’s supper, and will make the whole traditional feast, but it will happen after school on what’ a regular day here, so no guests, no parade or football game, no ‘holiday’ feeling. We’re really only doing it to teach the little ones about Thanksgiving day in America, and be in sympathy for our oldest one who’s on her own in WV, and (thank God for kind and wonderful people!) will be spending the day with the neighbours.

We’ll have black olives! LOL The baby would eat the whole jar if we let her.

  11. Susan — well, I suppose it’s a little late to get reservations to join us and a bit expensive for just one meal, but we’d have hosted your daughter at our table.

  12. Oh I am a huge fan of black olives…my sister in law and I still sorta fight over them. I’m supposed to be watching my salt at the moment so I guess I’ll need to put them at the opposite end of the table.

    Enjoy your day!
