The Fight of The Century

Okay, this is going to shock some of you, but I grew up a fight fan. I loved to sit at my father’s knee and watch the old time boxing events. If anybody is wondering what to get me for Christmas, how about Mayweather boxing tickets? This is shaping up to be a “gotta see” event!

Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are facing off in what promises to be the fight of the century. A mythical title is at stake, but both Mayweather and Pacquiao want to be known as the Greatest Pound for Pound Fighter in the World, and they’re going to duke it out for that privilege.

Mayweather is an “old-school” boxer. He was literally taught “the ropes” by his father, Floyd Mayweather, Sr., a former welter-weight boxing contender, and his uncle, Roger Mayweather, a former WBA Super Featherweight Champion. “Money” Mayweather (also known as “Pretty Boy”) has an impressive record: 40 Wins (25 knockouts, 15 decisions), 0 Losses, 0 Draws.

Manny Pacquiao, also known as Pac-Man, the Fighting Pride of the Philippines and The Mexicutioner, also has an impressive record: 50 Wins (38 knockouts, 12 decisions), 3 Defeats (2 by knockout, 1 by decision), 2 Draws. He has more TKOs than Mayweather, but he’s also suffered 3 defeats and two draws.

Who’s your money on?

    1. Thom — Manny has a better record — despite the losses and draws he has more experience. He’s a calm, methodical fighter. Mayweather is an old-fashioned pugilist. He punches for maximum pain — he’s also better at taking hits. I think they’re pretty well matched. I am leaning toward Mayweather only because he is better at taking hits. If I had my preference, personality wise I prefer Manny. He’s a much nicer guy.

  1. I have to admit I love the showmanship and the names, the whole spectacle… not so much the actual fighting! But it would be something to see who finally beats him after 40+ wins.

The “Mexicutioner” ROFL who thought up that one?

  3. As of 0800 HST on 26 December 2009, the ESPN article on this fight has attracted 4376 comments. Who knows how many thousands (millions?) of readers. All in the name of a “sport” in which two men try to knock each other senseless. A “sport” run by men whose credentials are shady at best and have been since at least the days of the Great Depression, when they preyed on men, especially black men, who had nothing left to lose but their lives. Which they did, and do, with regularity.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), whose policies (we’re told; see “shady”, supra) are at the heart of the current dispute between the Pacquiao and Mayweather camps, has (again, we’re told) a tough, intrusive testing protocol. The Pacquiao camp has accused it of “playing games”. The USADA should issue a terse, two-line statement as their complete and sufficient response. “We play games because the people we test do. Submit or be known as cheaters.”

Everyone should learn self-defense, for there are fighters in the world, and they do best among those who are unprepared to meet them. But shame on us for turning a necessity into a spectacle that reaps billions for its kingpins.

Bring on the lions, good Christian friends. And I don’t mean the ones from Detroit.

Kindly also reflect on the likelihood that a God would specially create a people that insists on acting like apes.
