Random Dozen — Year End

It’s that time again! Lidna over at 2nd Cup of Coffee has come up with 12 more questions. Come on and join us. This is the most intelligent reoccurring meme on the web!  (I wish it were smart enough to help me find my house key!)

The Missing Key, Meme!

1. Do you find it gross to share drinks with family? Friends?
Yes. I have major trouble sharing eating and drinking utensils. Get your own. Mind you, you can share my food and beverage – just NOT my utensils. I have, however shared my key with someone and can’t find it!

2. What have you learned this year? (You didn’t see a question of that weight coming, did you? At least not for #2.)
I have learned that Hawaii is visually a beautiful place to live, but it has been very hard on both of us.

3. When do you dismantle the Christmas decorations?
I never put any up. Three years ago we broke under the heavy weight of commercialism and said, “Enough.” We celebrated Jesus for Christmas.

4. Something you wish to accomplish before the end of 2009 is:
Getting my kitchen stuff sorted. What moves with us? What is trash? What is fit to donate?
I’d also like to find my missing house key. sigh

5. How do you feel about winter (after Christmas)?
Here in Hawaii – moot point. Winter is about 8 degrees cooler than Summer. The only change in my wardrobe is from tank tops to short sleeved t-shirts. I still wear all the same shorts and flip-flops on my feet. Ask me this again next winter. I am certain you’ll get a different answer!

6. Have you participated in after-Christmas sales?
NO! Although I am thinking about buying a photo keychain.  I’ve lost my darn house key again! I need a really cool keychain to help me keep track of it.

7. Do you have plans for New Year’s Eve?
We’ll be here quietly at home listening to the neighborhood explode. New Years Day I’ll spend looking for my flipping house key!

8. Is there anything special awaiting you in January?
Yes! We are moving back to the mainland. Hooray!  Of course, that’s if I can find my missing house key.

9. If your life this year was a movie, what category or genre would it be? (Romance, Comedy, Drama, Thriller, Suspense, Farcical, etc.)
Definitely a farce. Most of our time in Hawaii fits that category.  I mean, if your house key disappeared all the time, how would you feel about it?

10. How much time per day do you spend blogging? Please do not lie. I will know.
Truthfully, I don’t measure how much time I spend blogging. If I knew I would surely stop and I am enjoying myself too much for that.

11. Who runs your household?
We share.  He does this. She does that.  Major decisions we do together.  My house key I lose all by myself.

12. Share one hope/dream for 2010.
I miss teaching. I would like to work with children again.

    1. Linda — Hawaii has had a few good points — some bright spots here and there.

I am so glad I keep the house generally clean and clutter free. It is making the sorting go much faster!

  1. I do SO think you need to be working with kids again! And I trust you will be… by September at the very VERY latest! I suspect much sooner than that!

#3 is much easier for you because you do not have children. If you were to have some NOW it would not be an issue because that is how you would teach them… but had you had any before — you can’t just rip that kind of stuff away! I do think it’s great that you and Amoeba can do that… but it would never go over in my house.

  2. Oh boy, so many of these could have been my answers! Good luck with the kitchen stuff and everything else.

#2 is a hard-hitter. Not sure what I’d answer there, but I certainly wouldn’t want to ponder what I *didn’t* learn!

Ah well. Onward and upward: good luck in Washington, and with the move!

    1. Susan — I am certain I learned much this past year, but nothing sticks out except our discontent with promises made and promises broken.

  3. I don’t envy you having to sort through stuff, but it is helpful in the long run. I

‘m sorry the time in Hawaii was so hard in some ways.

You’ll be jumping into full-fledged winter in January!

I hope you do get to teach children again.

  4. May Washington be good for your souls.
(Our kind, not the politician kind… I don’t think DC is necessarily good for anyone’s soul.)

I rarely lose my key because my keyring is so very bulky with (lightweight) doo-dads on it. It’s a handful, and sometimes awkward, but difficult to lose.

Sometimes I think the way to celebrate Christmas would be to collect some lovely fallen greens to display with a carved wooden nativity set. And candles. I love candles.

    1. Thena — we love LIVING here. It is the interacting with others that makes life in Hawaii troublesome. This is a closed community. Though most people are not openly hostile, they are also not particularly friendly, helpful or welcoming.

I have lived in this house for 14 months. For 14 months I have said hello to the man across the street almost daily. Last week he answered me for the first time.

        1. Karen — every time Amoeba grumbles about the lack of Aloha in any place but in the tourist ads, I tell him that if we keep on showing it, maybe it will catch on ….

    1. Kathy we moved to Hawaii a little over two years ago because of Amoeba’s job. We are now moving the Friday Harbor, WA for the same reason. Hawaii’s university is in serious financial trouble and they aren’t keeping the promises that lured us here.

  6. Your answer to # 2 brings lots of questions to mind. I’ll have to drop back by and visit some of your older posts to see if I find some answers.

Hope everything goes smoothly with the move and that you have a blessed 2010.

  7. Keys are a pain in the behind 😉
And winter…grin, I saw a guy with a long, thick coat and two warm hats on top of each other today.
Mind you, I’m wearing Shorts and Tee…. winter in Egypt, very harsh one…
    😉

  8. I love moving – I know, I’m weird like that, so your move to Washington sounds exciting to me! I also love fresh starts and new beginnings, and you will be experiencing all that. Best wishes to you and Amoeba!

I love the name of your new hometown, Friday Harbor. It sounds so poetic! There must be a story behind it. I hope you’ll share if you find it out!
