Monday in Friday Harbor

We started out day at the Animal Shelter along with several other folks from Friday Harbor Labs who volunteered their time to help keep the place tidy.  Amoeba did yard work and walked dogs.  I washed windows, did a bit of dusting, and cuddled kitties.

As we left the shelter I wailed a bit about having forgotten to pack the battery charger for my camera (no photos at the animal shelter).  Amoeba drove to Radio Shack, where we met Cecil, who takes customer service above and beyond the ordinary.  Cecil outfitted us with a universal camera battery charger, and even configured it for me to make it easy to use — and it is.  My camera battery is now charged.

After we left Radio Shack, we walked down the street to Mi Casita and had a lovely lunch.  After lunch we walked around the neighborhood a bit and went into Serendipity Used Books and bought enough books to elicit a big smile from the proprietor.

Then we walked around the neighborhood a bit more before heading back for the car (borrowed) and returning home (the labs until our furniture arrives from Hawaii).  Once we returned home I finally put up the answer to Punny Monday — not that you all didn’t already know it — and did a bit of blogging.

Then Amoeba and I decided to walk down to the main  lab and check the mail [we didn’t do so on Saturday].  I took my camera and got some stunning photos of several of the Cascade Peaks, so stay tuned.

At the main lab we visited with several people — including a scientist who just happens to be visiting from Hawaii.  We thought it ironic that we’d never met him there. We spent some time together taking photos of snow-capped mountains, then parted in different directions.

Amoeba and I went out on the pier and walked the length of the docks.  He was looking at the algae and seaweed growing near the docks.  I was taking photographs.  Finally we made our way home — only to discover that the internet was down.  Luckily, it didn’t stay down long.

Tomorrow Amoeba starts work and I start looking for work. I heard yesterday that the schools have so many subs they don’t all get work.  Then I heard today that budget cuts closed the middle school — now there is just elementary school, grades k-7 and high school, grades 8-12.  Wish me luck.

  2. How nice of you to work in an animal shelter, but I am disappointed that there are no photos ! I scrolled through your whole blog to find photos, but lately you are very stingy ! I haven’t seen your new home yet ! I am so curious !

  7. I am thrilled that you have been out enjoying the beauty around your new home — and all that walking! My heart longs to see my beloved mountains again, so I patiently and happily await the sharing of your photographs.
    Budget cuts are everywhere. Perhaps one way to get “in” is to meet the local principal at your desired school and offer to do a bit of volunteering? Where I live now, many moms who consistently volunteer at the school end up being hired as substitutes — preferred because the teachers and administration already know what they are getting when she is called.

    1. Jenn — Amoeba and I had discussed such possibilities. Also, volunteering at the schools so they will know me when it comes time to hire.

  11. Well sounds like you are getting more settled in. Well as settled in as you can without your things there yet. Nice when someone gives you the customer service that Cecil did. All the pictures you took did you use invisible film:? LOL. Things are still the same here. It’s gotten chiller at night. We went down to 66…brr it was cold! I had to even was under the covers last night. Not much to report other than that. I’m looking forward to the 28th 🙂 xoxoxo

    1. Thom — no invisible film. Invisible time. This dang laptop is so hard to use that answering a simple comment like this takes tons of extra time. Windows open and close on their own. The cursor jumps around all over the place. The keys and touch pad are so sensitive that looking at them sets them off. I spend more time cussing than blogging.

  13. Sounds like a nice, relaxing day. Is Amoeba excited about starting back to work there? I didn’t realize your furniture hadn’t arrived yet — I had imagined you unpacking and deciding where to arrange things.

    1. Barbara — with everybody praying for me I am certain God will put me where I will best serve his kingdom. I wouldn’t say Amoeba is excited about his job. He has, after all, been working here almost every other summer for 25 years. He is however content to be home where he and his work are both appreciated appreciated and respected.

      Our car should arrive the end of this month. Our stuff won’t be here for another 2-3 weeks after that. We arrived by plane, bus, ferry and taxi (literally). Our stuff is traveling by ship, truck, ferry and truck. That takes a bit longer.

  14. Aww, I wish I had gone out to volunteer yesterday. Helping out at the local animal shelter would have been fun. When I was a kid my 4-H club went over there and cleaned up their pet cemetery (almost wrote in the Stephen King way!)
