Herron with Dinner

The Washington State Ferries provide transportation from San Juan Island to the mainland and back. I took this photo while Amoeba and I were waiting for the ferry home after our weekend at Deception Pass State Park. Since we had a couple of hours to kill and it was a beautiful day, we decided to visit the beach. Almost immediately I noticed this Heron wading along the shoreline and trained my camera on him.

He stood immobile for ages, and so did I. Finally, I was rewarded for my patience when he struck — amazingly fast — and captured this fish. I have several shots of him dining as well, but since he was moving they are a bit blurred.

  3. What a terrific capture, Quilly! That really is a beautiful area and, of course, I really love Deception Pas State Park — although you guys didn’t get the best weather. My kids and I all went there last summer when they were here for my birthday. Hope your weekend is going well! Have a great Memorial Day!

    1. Gig- — I braced the camera on an old piling still at the edge of the sea even though the old pier is long gone.

      1. It doesn’t look blurry to me…. Maybe you’re comparing it to other ones on the same strip or the unuploaded original (which always seem better quality for me) but by itself, I don’t see it haha. You did a great job of this one. Animals are hard to photograph, they don’t understand that we just need them to stay still while we approach haha!!! I was trying to photograph a dolphin in malibu and it’s much more blurry than this!

  13. Quilly, I think this illustrates, a tiny bit, of the reward of “being still and knowing that He is God.” Sometimes, He rewards us with just a tiny glimpse of his majesty at work. Great photo!

    1. Kelley — it is interesting that you should say that because I was thinking along those lines when waiting for the photo — not specifically that, but I was wondering how anyone could be surrounded by such beauty and majesty (the PNW) and not believe the world was created.

  14. It’s an absolutely perfect picture and I can hardly believe you had the patience to wai for it.. I am always amazed at how long those great blues can stand absolutely still waiting for their dinner to come along. No wonder they are so skinny ;>)

    1. Sallie — I am not certain it was patience. I had the time and nowhere to go! And while I waited, I did manage to talk to two other beach walkers.
