Service Beyond the Ordinary

Amoeba declared that if he ate one more piece of fish he was going to die. Then he said we were going to Red Robin for lunch and he was ordering meat. I wasn’t as down on fish as Amoeba, but I had certainly had my fill of drawn butter and cream sauces, so I agreed — but I was craving salad.

We went to the Red Robin at Wareham Crossing Mall in Wareham, MA. Amoeba ordered Nachoes. I had a Chinese Chicken Salad. And then I asked the waiter:

“Where is your carousel horse? I have been eating in Red Robin restaurants since the early 80s, and have visited RR restaurants in half a dozen states. Every one of those restaurants has has at least one carousel horse. Where is yours?”

Maleek, our server extraordinaire, said that the Plymouth RR has a carousel horse, but — alas — their store did not. I said, “But a Red Robin just isn’t a Red Robin without a carousel horse!” Maleek apologized and went away. I dug into my salad and it was so good I promptly forgot about carousel horses or anything that didn’t involve mandarin oranges, tangy Asian salad dressing and fresh veggies.

Maleek returned to the table. He said, “I didn’t want you to be disappointed, so I got you a carousel horse.”

I was amazed and charmed. How incredibly sweet. Maleek mentioned my comment to the manager, who went back, found me a clip art horse, printed him out and pasted him on a carousel stick just for me. If you are ever in Wareham, Massachusetts, be sure to visit Wareham Crossing and eat at the Red Robin — and make sure you ask for Maleek. He goes above and beyond the expected customer service.

  5. They just opened a Red Robin 3 miles from me. Curt and I finally went last week. Other than they couldn’t do rare, Tue food & the cherry vodka lime drink were really good. We went in from the back mall entrance, I didn’t notice, but didn’t look for a carousel horse. Now I have to go back ;P

  6. Now that’s service! I would love to get up to the New England states one day. FW and I visited Maine BK (before kids) and we LOVED it. We keep saying we are going to go back there one day and perhaps to Cape Cod.

    Are you going to run up to New Hampshire? If you do be sure to get you a nice big juicey FRIED CLAM ROLL. They are very different from the clams you have on the West Coast.

    Every time we go (I had lived there for three years and didn’t get my fill then) we HAVE to have one. Probably you will see signs but most of the smaller drive-ins should have them. Ask who in town does if they don’t.

  8. Wow, how sweet and thoughtful! I have never been to a Red Robin — I don’t know if they even have them here. I have never seen one — I think I have only heard of them in your blog. I’ll have to go to their web site and see where the nearest one is….

    OK, just did, and there is only one in TN, about half an hour away. Farther than we usually go for meals, but maybe some day!

    I know what Amoeba means — sometimes I just crave meat, beef espcially.

  10. I love this! Isn’t this why we love traveling…all those lovely little acts of kindness and surprising discoveries along the way?

    We do like Red Robin and I think I may have mentioned before that we have two nieces who work in their corp offices in Denver. However, I have never noticed the carousel horse thingy…I’ll have to ask them about that? By the way, like Amoeba, perhaps even more often, I crave beef.

  11. It is hard to find good Customer Service, It’s almost like a Special Present when it does happen. I hope they come along and see this Quilly.
