French Vanilla Flavored Macaroni & Cheese

If you think it sounds vile you should try tasting it. Amoeba likened it to being bushwhacked by a dear and trusted friend.

He’d arrived at the dining room table with a light of love in his eyes — not for me, for my homemade macaroni and cheese, one of his favorite dishes. He filled his plate, grabbed his fork, took a bite and froze, staring down at his dinner in dismay. Slowly he lifted his gaze to me.  Most likely my face mirrored his look of horror. I know my taste buds were outraged.

I make my mac and cheese with real butter, real cream and real aged cheddar cheese. Sometimes I substitute Half & Half for cream, especially if there is a fantastic sale on Half & Half, which there was — sort of:

Please don’t tell anyone I am a certified reading teacher.

Quilly is the pseudonym of Charlene L. Amsden, who lives on The Big Island in Hawaii. When she is not hanging out with Amoeba, she is likely teaching or sewing. Or she could be cooking, taking photographs, or even writing. But if she's not doing any of that, she's probably on Facebook or tinkering with her blog.

Oops! A real Quilly boo boo here.
I would love to taste your ‘real stuff” Mac’n’cheese. I’ll have a small helping, please.

    1. CL — I have had mac & cheese with cinnamon. That is yummy. French Vanilla coffee sweetener isn’t. The sugar content of the stuff is horribly cloying and I don’t even think I’d like it in coffee.

  2. Oh no! Was it salvageable at all?

I once accidentally grabbed the cinnamon in a dish that called for chili powder. Similar not so pleasant taste surprise!

    1. Barbara — the first bite was a surprise. The second bite was: “Okay, I don’t particularly like it, but it won’t kill me.” The third bite was: “It might kill me.” The fourth bite was: “I can’t swallow this.” Amoeba pretty much experienced the same reaction. It was horrid. We put it down the garbage disposal.

  3. This post should have come with a “drinks” warning. As in, “don’t have a drink in your mouth when reading the following.”

I laughed out loud — and then felt chagrined because it could have SO EASILY happened to me!

  4. This just cracked me up! How often do we grab an item at the grocery only to be surprised later by our selection.

btw – after raving about your ‘real’ mac & cheese, you could have included your ‘real’ recipe…hint, hint

  5. Yow! An understandable mistake and one of a sort I have made plenty of times. That said, Amoeba’s reaction makes perfect sense. That sounds truly and deeply horrible.

    1. Doug — vile doesn’t even begin to describe the taste. It was so bad that I gag just thinking about it and I will likely never enjoy French Vanilla coffee again.

  6. ROTFL 😀

If I want flavor, I get some of the vanilla-flavored COFFEE (which my husband thinks is somewhat vile). Plain ol’ half-n-half for me! It’s safer that way…
