Storage Solutions

Okay, I live in a big house and it has lots of room. I even have a huge two-car garage and only one little car. I have plenty of storage space, what I seem to be in short supply of is storage organization. I am in the market for a good storage system. I want places to keep stuff that will help my storage area stay neat and tidy.

For the garage I was actually considering using school lockers. I think they would do a great job organizing our tools, lawn equipment (except the mower), and even Amoeba’s bicycle gear — especially Amoeba’s bicycle gear! Plus, he wouldn’t always be asking me where he put things. Hello?

I was kind of excited when our local second hand store advertised lockers for sale.  I rushed right over.  Big disappointment.  They had only two lockers and both of them were quite small and made of flimsy plastic.  They were more like theme decorations, especially since they were in black and gold and displayed the name and emblem of a well known NFL team.  I did think about getting just one locker to store our coats in, but they were just too flimsy.  Besides, we have a wonderful coat closet.  It just isn’t near the garage, which is where we mostly come and go from, and I am lazy.

I think a bank of wood lockers along one wall would look really nice and keep things neat.  I even considered the wire basket type gym lockers since we could see into the baskets and know what was where, but I don’t think they would look as sleek and nice as enclosed storage.  Maybe we’d be better off to just go out and throw all the tools, bike paraphernalia and garden equipment away.  Then the garage would be clean for sure!

  1. I dunno, “stuff” has a way of accumulating in garages. 🙂 And the open ones would leave the contents to get dusty. I had never thought about using lockers for storage, but it is an interesting idea.

  2. I had a college friend who, in her first apartment, used a bank of lockers on either side of her bed and then small ones across the top as a sort of “frame” headboard — they were high up — no one leaning against those things, but they provided storage and a cool look for a just-graduated person. I was going to replicate this in my son’s room but it is nearly impossible to find affordable metal lockers — especially the old fashioned kind!

I wonder what they did with the ones they tore out of the “Y” when they renovated???

  3. That’s a cool idea, although the lockers we had at my school didn’t fit anything in them haha. Maybe you could find a school under renovation that might sell you some.

  4. Well, I’m sure there’s a carpenter somewhere on that island that would be interested in a little side job! I don’t think you’re going to find what your looking for any CHEAPER than what a carpenter would do it for ya… IF you can find them at all… I would loan you Dennis – but… he hates to travel. DARN! That would give ME an excuse to come with him! LOL! Walmart & KMart sometimes have fairly sturdy lawn & garden storage thingys — for a fair price — but I guess that’s not the look you want either, huh? I do agree with Barbara that the wire ones would leave stuff get awfully dusty…. *sigh*

  5. We have an old Army locker (from an armory that got new stuff at some point, back when my husband was in the National Guard). It holds some of our garden tools and is terribly useful, if rather ugly.
My SIL found some school-sized metal lockers for her boys’ room and they looked great painted in bright primary colors. I’m not sure where she found them, but knowing her, they were a great deal.
