Because Sunday was Easter, they celebrated her birthday Saturday afternoon. He took She out for a drive. They visited several of the most beautiful spots on the island. At one point they were on the north side above Lime Kiln Park. He took She there to look for whales (even though it is a bit early in the season).
She stood at the retaining wall taking in the vast expanse of blue water and blue sky before her. Even the Cascade Mountains were blue.
Blue. Blue. Blue. Blue. Blue.
She said, “I don’t see any whales — so you’re about to hear one!”
He said, “Don’t be silly. Of course you can’t see Wales. This isn’t even the right ocean!”
She had a very happy birthday, even if she did spend it with a smart-alec.
This morning when I offered to go to the lab with Amoeba and tell everybody it was his birthday, he said, “No way!” However, he didn’t tell me I couldn’t go into the teacher’s lounge at noon and do so. I arrived at Amoeba’s work place and slipped into the main office just a little before he usually takes his lunch. I had a German Chocolate cake with me which immediately drew the attention of several people who wondered what requirements they had to meet in order to get a piece. I told them that all they needed to do was stick around.
Amoeba took his own sweet time getting to the lunch room. I actually contemplated leaving the cake there with the secretary and going on home, especially since nobody knew where on campus he might be, and he wasn’t answering his cell phone. The secretary told me that Amoeba almost always arrives between 12 and 12:30 for lunch and she convinced me to be patient.
At 12:20 Amoeba arrived. He was quite startled to see me and eyed the cake ruefully, but there was also a spark of appreciation in his eyes. He was Happy Birthday serenaded TWICE. Once by the secretary and I, then again by a couple colleagues in the lunch room. He did not die of embarrassment, in fact I think he rather enjoyed himself.
Happy Birthday to You,
Happy Birthday to You,
Happy Birthday Amoeba,
Happy Birthday to You!
My love is suffering his birthday today. I do think he likes his gift. I gave him a hand-crank emergency radio with am/fm/weather band tuning, a flashlight and an emergency cell phone charger. He immediately cranked it up and listened to the news over breakfast.
I tried to talk him into not going to work but he is much too responsible for that. He is leaving a bit early though so we can go to his favorite seafood restaurant for dinner before play practice. He must sing and dance in preparation of the May opening of My Fair Lady. Tonight they are doing a full custom parade.
And, in not birthday related news, I am feeling a bit better. I spent most of yesterday still and slept all night last night. I’m not 100% yet, but am definitely on the mend.
While you are all waiting for me to post something, why don’t you run over to Bill’s place and wish him some birthday cheer. Since he is one year and two days younger than I, I can tell you with complete certainty that this is his 49th birthday.
