Role Reversal

Morning assembly, all the classes stand in straight lines and we salute the flag together, then we listen as the AP gives the morning announcements. He dismisses the students with the words, “If I don’t see you again today, enjoy your winter break, and I’ll see you next year.”

Murmers immediately swept the crowd. My students were not immune.

“Next year?”

“Next year?”

“Did he say, next year?”

Sid turned to me in disbelief, “Ms. A? Next year?” The whole class riveted on my answer.

I grinned. “Yep. When you guys leave here at 11:30 this morning, I won’t have to… uhm, I won’t get to see your grimy, uh, … I mean, smiling, faces until next year.”

Sid dropped his chin and gave me the same, I-am-not-amused look I give him when I really am amused, but don’t want him to know.

Pansy Petite raised her eyebrows and put her hands on her hips. “Ms. A,” she scolded, “that was not very nice.”

And I reacted for them exactly the way they react for me. I held up my hands, gave them a look of wide-eyed surprise and said, “Wha-?”

  1. I always used to have to think about our Christmas Breaks. We’d be finshed about the 21st of December and didn’t have to go back for another two weeks. The four days from last day of school leading up to Christmas seems to take forever, but then after Christmas the time flew and we were back in school before we knew it.

Blogger is being a pain today, I don’t know if it is Blogger or just bad timing but I have to use my Opera Browser to comment on Non Beta Blogs.

Enjoy your holidays from School, teachers need the break just as much as the students

  2. Winter break!!! Yeah!!!

Teachers aren’t supposed to use students words back at them. 🙂

Btw, I hope you can still consider visiting FL some day.

Have a great weekend and break and enjoy the holidays.

  3. Our school has never ended up having a “snow” day, but today we had a “wind” day and school was closed. We are not out until 3:05 Wednesday! Lucky you!!!

  4. Brian — teachers are vindictive and evil, don’tcha kinw?

Jan — yes, but when are you back in schol? I return January 2nd.

Jamie — no snow day? Do you still live back home? No snow?

  5. Yes, I am still home! All the snow melted with the rain and then came the wind. We are supposed to have snow again by Christmas.

  6. ahhh… Winter break. Hope you and the kids enjoy it!

BTW – All of our snow is gone, too. All of the fields look more like lakes. Lots of rain.

  7. OC — kids now are just like we were then. People that say they aren’t are wrong. The only difference between who they are and who we were, is how fast they learn about the bad things this world offers.
