She almost always meets him at the door when he comes home from work. Even though they’ve been together more than two years, before him there was ten years of loneliness and futile dates. She does not take him for granted.
She generally greets him with a smile, a kiss, a hug, and the passionate exclamation, “Mine!”
He almost always laughs and queries, “Gold or silver?” Then she tells him, “Love is the only treasure I want.” It is all really very mushy and sweet.
The other day when he came home, OJM was visiting, but still She went to the door when He arrived and greeted him in her customary manner. “Mine!”
He said, “Hello, OJM. Be careful it doesn’t blow up.”
She was confused. OJM was making spaghetti sauce. Why would it explode? She said to him, “Be careful what doesn’t blow up?”
OJM laughed. He shook his head and said, “Never mind, dear. It doesn’t matter.” Then to OJM he said, “Do I have time to shower before dinner?” OJM told him to make it quick so He hurried to the bathroom.
She said to OJM, “Something is going to explode and I’m not supposed to worry?”
OJM looked at her like she was crazy and said, “You mean you seriously didn’t get that?”
She said, “So, do you need any help finishing dinner?”
The next evening She heard the click, click, click of his bike chain and the rattle of the gate, and went to the door to greet him. She stepped out of the house, helped him remove his bicycle helmet, hugged him, kissed him, opened her mouth … and suddenly She understood. Mine. Be careful it doesn’t blow up. She said, “Oh my gosh, I get it!”
He looked very confused and a bit wary and said, “What have you got?”
She said, “Apparently a mine field.”
He laughed and said, “I love you, too.”
And she said, “Mine!”
