For Jackie

My sister asked for Hawaii flora. Most of the flora in Hawaii is from elsewhere …

This is the White Shower Tree, named for it’s showers of flowers.

This is the Rainbow Shower Tree, also named for the color of it’s flowers.

This is the orange, Pride of Barbados.

This is the yellow, Pride of Barbados.

This beauty is the Bird of Paradise.

That will have to do for now. I will have more to share later. This island is covered in beauty. For now, I have to go prepare. I have a job interview tomorrow with the Department of Education.

Quilly is the pseudonym of Charlene L. Amsden, who lives on The Big Island in Hawaii. When she is not hanging out with Amoeba, she is likely teaching or sewing. Or she could be cooking, taking photographs, or even writing. But if she's not doing any of that, she's probably on Facebook or tinkering with her blog.

  1. Brig — thank you — I’m hoping I’ll show some skill, too!

Jennifer — even more so then the photo shows.

    Mumma — here’s hoping you’re right!

  2. Nice pics! But uhm, interview? Isn’t that a precursor to getting a job? I guess even paradise isn’t perfect. I pictured your days would be spent listening to OC play his music and discussing latin names for things.

  3. Good luck with the interview Quill. I am sure you will be hired with no problems at all.

    Beautiful pictures. I have a bird-of-paradise picture too. πŸ˜€

    Say hi to O.C.

  4. Mmmmmm… much beauty! Much MUCH beauty! Soak it all up Quilly! And yes … photograph EVERYTHING! (and share!) I love that orange one — and of course, the Bird of Paradise! Just gorgeous! Blessings on that job interview!!! ( i didn’t realize we had to WORK in Paradise… darn… )

  5. Thanks, CB. They are beautiful. I want some of each of those in my garden! Now!
Good luck on the interview. YOU are interviewing THEM, right? I know if it’s where you are supposed to be, that’s where you’ll end up.

  6. Good Luck with the Interview on Wednesday, I’ll say a wee prayer for you that you have good fortune.

the pictures were beautiful, one of these years I’ll make a trip to Hawaii, maybe buy OC another pizza

  7. Brian — thanks. I’ll give them your endorsement.

Melli — Maynard G. Krebs didn’t have to work. The rest of us mortals require shelter and sustenance, even in paradise.

Jackie — I don’t think they’re zone four plants …. come here and see them all you want. And thanks for the perspective adjustment. I’ll keep it in mind.

Bill — thank you. And you’re welcome to visit, even without the pizza.

SN — thank you. I’ll let you know.

Polona — thanks — for the compliment and the good wishes.

  8. I don’t know that I’m willing to “pay the bills” per se, but is there a guest room? What’s the rent? And most importantly, do you have an air compressor?

  9. Morgan — there is a spare room. The rent is negotiable since the room is very spare. You might want to bring your own bed … And as for an air compressor — no. However, there’s a dive shop on every corner and few scattered about inbetween.

  10. For pete’s sake we will all want to board a plane as soon as yesterday!!!
I will wait to hear of your wonderful interview. They don’t know how fortunate those children will be to have you!

  11. Pauline — the interview of me went well. My interview of them — not so well. Do you know that on a cost-of-living basis, Hawaii pays the lowest teacher salaries in the nation?

  12. You people in the warmer climates get all the really flashy flowers…

Sorry about the disappointing pay scale. But, I am glad the interview went well. πŸ™‚

  13. Blogger and WordPress are not getting along. I left a comment here yesterday, even checked to make sure it took and then it was gone.

    Lovely flowers.

The lack of respect for teachers is deplorable.
