First off, I want to offerKim Vogel Sawyer, Krista Ocier and all the Zondervan folks, and the First Wild Card bloggers an apology for my negligence in posting this review. I should not have scheduled any book reviews for the time before, during or after my vacation trip.
I did read Katy’s Debate and I enjoyed it every bit as much as I enjoyed, Katy’s New World, the first book in the Katy Lambright series (my review here). Katy is every bit a typical teen, but she lives in a community very atypical to most of us. Katy is a Mennonite and her fellowship follows the old ways very closely. Katy has been given special permission to continue her education in a public high school, but her father and the elders are monitoring her very closely.
Katy is trying to remain a dutiful daughter, follow God’s will and live out her own dreams, but her father seems to be intent on screwing things up. He is courting the Widow Graber and if he marries her their lives will change much more substantially then they changed when Katy went off to school. Katy sets out to show her father — and Mrs. Graber — that she doesn’t need a mother. In typical teen fashion, Katy focuses on her own wants and needs, putting her father in the position for choosing betweeen Katy and Mrs. Graber. If Katy wins, will it really be a victory?
