Rainy Day Reading

After Dinner last night, we retired to our lovely little private tent.  Amoeba and I were tired.  We’d gotten up before the sun, driven to Vancouver, then bused and ferried another several hundred miles.  It was 9 p.m., the sun was just setting and we were ready for some relaxing.  I wanted a bath.

Ella did, too, and she beat me to the tub.  She was pretty upset when I explained that she was just too small and once there was enough water in the tub to turn the jets on, it would be decidedly over her head.

Ella in the Spa Tub

I helped Ella out of the tub and prepared the bath. She +peeked over the side at the hot, roiling water and decided she’d just have a shower, thanks. I found the tub exquisite.

This morning we woke to the pitter-patter of falling rain on our canvas roof. I opened the bamboo blinds and peeked outside. “Oh my gosh,!” I excalimed. “Somebody stole the ocean!”

Amoeba commented that it appeared they were trying to replace it with plenty of fresh water. The rain poured down and the fog came in to the shoreline.

Ella grabbed her book, snuggled back into the covers and said it wasn’t fit weather out for elephant or beast. And then she asked us to go fetch her breakfast from the lodge!

MyThoughts:
Great description. Compelling narrative. Sibling rivalry. Good vs. evil. Believable characters. And even though you’ll think you know where the plot is going, the ending will surprise yet satisfy you.

Ella Reads

I was not feeling well yesterday — horrid headache — and could barely take care of myself.  I had no energy to watch Ella.  I was certain she would get into some horrific trouble.  At one point I heard her out romping on the deck and trying to catch the Hummingbirds.  I figured that meant the end of my garden, expecting whatever she hadn’t eaten to be trampled.  Imagine my surprise when everything was just as I left it.

Ella said, “Why would I want to eat vegetables when you had rhubarb jelly?”  Since Amoeba loves the rhubarb jelly, I feared Ella had just worn out her welcome, but she didn’t eat much of that, either.  I am missing a half-box of ice creams bars, though.  I mentioned that to Ella and she shrugged and said she might have eaten one or two, but certainly no more than six.

Then I went into my office and found my computer on and the web page for online stock trading.  My credit card was right there beside it.  I was immediately worried.  I figured that she’d given my investment portfolio a whole new look and I’d own stock in a half-dozen peanut farms in Georgia.  Ella swears the computer is exactly the way I left it.  In fact, she said she spent most of yesterday on the couch.

I was immediately worried.  Was she sick?  I checked and she had no fever.  That’s when she reached behind the couch pillow and pulled out my book!  I said, “Hey, I’m reading that!”

Ella had my copy of Chosen Ones from the Aedyn Chronicles by Alister McGrath. She opened the book and settled back against the pillows. “You snooze, you loose,” she said. “Now you will just have to wait until I finish.”   I was going to argue when it dawned on me that reading would keep her out of trouble while I install a padlock on the freezer and hide my credit cards!

About The Book:

About The Author:

McGrath, a longtime professor at Oxford University, now holds the Chair in theology, ministry, and education at the University of London. He is the author of several books on theology and history.

My Thoughts:
This Zonderkids fantasy novel is very well written, has compelling characters and enough peril in the plot to keep the pages turning.  I’ve not finished it yet but I am quite enjoying it.  As a certified reading teacher I can tell you that this would be a favored book in a fantasy lover’s library.  An adult reader will find many similarities between the Aedyn Chronicles and the Chronicles of Narnia, but despite sharing many parallels the stories are different.  Moreover, Chosen Ones is written in a fresh, modern voice which will quickly engage it’s reader.
